These three differentiated worksheets contain a variety of fronted adverbial activities to develop pupils’ knowledge of fronted adverbials and improve their skills in using fronted adverbials in their writing. Pupils examine the personalities of Chaya, Neel and Nour in this character trait matching exercise.
Pupils match the names of the three main characters from The Girl Who Stole An Elephant by Nizrana Farook with character traits, evidence from the text, and an explanation (PEE).
The quotes from the text have been provided, character traits with definitions, alongside the explanations.
This resource has been differentiated three ways:
• Higher ability: 9 quotes, character traits and explanations have been provided.
• Middle ability: 9 quotes, character traits with definitions and explanations have been provided.
• Lower ability: 9 character traits with definitions and explanations have been provided.
This activity is a great way for pupils to think carefully about how a character’s personality is revealed by what they do and how they react in a story. This gives pupils an opportunity to use their inference skills and familiarises pupils with Point, Evidence and Explanation.
All quotes are taken from chapters 1-16 of the adventure story.
Answer sheets have also been included.
After the matching activity, pupils plan and write a character profile using the writing template provided. This example Chaya character profile can be used as a handy WAGOLL or model text.

Example diary entry text for The Iron Man written from the point of view of a fisherman seeing the Iron Man for the first time, plus writing feature identification worksheet. This exemplar text is perfect to use as a WAGOLL after reading Chapter 1 of Ted Hughes’ novel The Iron Man.
The diary recount text contains the following features: language features such as similes, metaphors, alliteration, onomatopoeia, repetition for effect and rule of three; grammar features such as fronted adverbials followed by commas, exclamatory sentences, noun phrases and a variety of nouns to avoid repetition; and punctuation such as exclamation marks, apostrophes for contractions, apostrophes for possession, colons and dashes.
